Minutes of Zone 6 Annual General Meeting
Arrowsmith Golf Club, November 5th, 2011

The Chair, Steve Watson, called the meeting to order at 10:00 am, welcomed the attendees and ask each one to stand, give his name and what club he represents.
Steve commented on how pleased he was with the events of  2011, what a strong committee Zone 6 has, and its continued efforts to serve the players in this region. He thanked each member of the committee for their efforts and asked for their continued support for 2012. He mentioned the fact that the number of golfers in Zone 6 has again declined in 2011 and how the levy revenue enables us to continue providing the financial support for the Zone activities.
Steve also commented on the excellent results from many of the Zone 6 players in Provincial events.

Secretary Treasurer: Bob Monaghan handed out copies of the 2011 Financial report to the delegates and answered questions from the floor with regard to the extent of assistance available to those representing the Zone in the Provincial events. The fact that we had a surplus of $31.53 was well received as previous years had deficits. Bob assured them that a copy of the report would be posted on the Zone website.

Tournament Chair: Jim Collie presented his report for 2011 commenting on the success of the Club Challenge event at Qualicum Beach Memorial Golf Club and the stellar play of teams from Port Alberni and Arrowsmith. 14 courses from Zone 6 were represented. This was the 3rd year for this fun event and most of the teams are made up with the higher handicap players included. Jim announced that the 2012 event would be held at Sunnydale Golf Club. Our Zone Senior and Amateur Qualifier will be held at Morningstar Golf Club.

Pat Irwin informed the group about the success of the 2011 Junior Program, although it got off to a dismal start due to the bad weather the rest of the spring played out as planned when the weather cooperated. Zone 6 also hosted the Inter-zone inter club at Mt Brenton with Zones 3,4,5 and 6 involved, each year its hosted by a different zone. He announced some changes he is planning for 2012. The SNAG Golf program is growing. Some of the highlights of Pats year was to see the success of players like Brayden Eriksen for example and he is looking forward to more in 2012.

REPORTS:

Zone 6 Chair's Report for 2011

2011 was another solid year led by a Zone 6 Committee that continues to try to serve the players from March Meadows to Seven Hills, and over to Myrtle Point. We, the Zone 6 Committee does what it can to serve the golfers across the zone.

Last year, I talked about the number of players continuing to slowly decline over time. Unfortunately, we are continuing to see more of the same although the Committee, I think, continues to move forward in trying to provide value to the players in this zone. The challenge is providing meaningful ways to interact and be available. We continue to provide these fundamental elements:

 1) Tournaments of excellence to provide the best players from this Zone an opportunity to represent us in junior, amateur and senior provincial championships. Storey Creek was a great venue this year.

 2) Tournaments of fun to provide players of all skill levels the opportunity to play with fellow members in a scramble format for the Club Challenge.
Qualicum Beach Memorial was in great shape and a challenge.

 3) Rules Seminars were held again this year to provide the opportunity for the average golfer to come out and hear about the rules of the game. We also have Golf British Columbia rules officials in place available not only for our zone - run events, but local club events as well – this unique to our zone.

 4) The recognition of the excellent junior program that is held to reach new potential golfers - the future of the game - through the Snag Golf program, to the development of existing players through a good tournament schedule. Pat Irwin does a tremendous job in leading this program.

The Zone Committee will now turn its attention to the planning for 2012. We need to continually learn and provide, what we hope, is a valued service. The committee looks to all the players and golf courses to do what they can to further the game; we need everyone involved.

In 2011, I would like to thank all members of the committee for their volunteer efforts and commitment. Thank you to the rules officials. Most of all, thank you to the players across the zone that continue to participate. Please continue to support this important game in 2012.

Sincerely,
Stephen Watson

Tournament Chairs Report - 2011

The Zone 6 Tournament Chairman is responsible for organizing and running the Club Challenge Event as well as the Zone 6 Amateur and Senior Amateur championships each year. He also coordinates the golf event now tied in with our annual general meeting.

The Club Challenge, which is the first event of the year, was held at Qualicum Beach Memorial golf club on May 7th with 15 teams competing in the scramble event. The winning club in the gross event was Arrowsmith while the net winner was Port Alberni who has now captured the net award three years in a row.  We are now going into our fourth year for this popular event which will be held at Sunnydale on May 5, 2012.

The 2011 Zone 6 Amateur was held at Storey Creek Golf Club on May 28/29th in Campbell River. The Amateur and Senior Amateur were again combined, however, different tees were used for each event with the Amateur event set at over 6500 yds and the Seniors just under 6300 yds. We had 33 amateurs entered, down 3 from previous year and 25 seniors which is up 6 from 2010. The amateur event was won by Sandy Harper with the Zone 6 team made up of Sandy, Kristian Hrabowych, Joe Knight and Pieter Delaray. Our top finisher at the BC Amateur was Mark Valliere in 15th position while our zone team finished 7th in the province. The Senior event was won by Tony Hatchwell who has now won this even the last 4 years in an row and 6 times all together. Our Senior low net champion for 2011 was Kim Hay. Our top finisher at the BC Seniors in Squamish was Tony who ended up in 2nd place. The 2012 combined Amateur and Senior Amateur is scheduled for May 26/27th at Morningstar Golf Club.

Other outstanding achievements for the Zone 6 golfers last year include Sandy Harper winning the Pacific Northwest Mid Amateur Championship in Everett as well as Steve Watson and Greg Koster finishing 3rd and 4th respectively at the BC Mid Amateur Championship held at Storey Creek.

Jim Collie - Zone 6 Tournament Director

Junior Report – 2011

The 2011 Spring Tour got off to a dismal start, primarily weather wise with a complete shock, budget wise, to me, for the Inter-zone inter-club.

The season was to have started on March 19 at Qualicum with the first of a two day (Qualicum and Glacier Greens) Two Ball . Weather and a lack of entries made cancellation the only option. The premise was to have a player from last year bring one new player from their home club to play with as a partner in this two day event.

March 24th was the date of the Inter-zone inter-club. This long running event was hosted by Zone 6 at Mt. Brenton. It brings together the top male players from BCGA Zones 3, 4, 5 and 6. Each year a different zone hosts.

Going on past expenses I had budgeted $450.00 for this event. When the dust had settled the food alone came to $666.90 while the Pro-V1 balls for prizes added another $277.70. The total of $944.60 is a very long way from the original $450.00 and for this I apologize. The only upside to this whole mess is that the Zone 6 team, lead by Brayden Eriksen, won the day by a healthy 10 stroke margin over Zone 3.

The rest of the spring played out pretty much as planned where the weather cooperated.

March 26 at March Meadows was cancelled due to snow conditions

March 27 at Nanaimo had 26 players

April 2 – Fairwinds – 29

April 3 – Pheasant Glen – 35

April 9 – Mt. Brenton – 60 (15 pros/45 juniors in a modified stableford, pro/am) a huge success with teams from Zone 5 as well.

April 10 – Crown Isle – called on account of a major rain storm (refunded all fees to the kids)

April 16 – Alberni – cancelled – weather & lack of entries

April 17 – Sunnydale – 27 (incorporated a rules clinic)

April 30 – Comox – 29

May 1 – Storey Creek – 20

The Summer Tour was a success, with four two day tournaments within the 13 scheduled events.

May 17/18, Arrowsmith hosted a two day tournament with a horse-race following the first day round. 31players enjoyed this tournament.

May 21 – Morningstar – 30

May 22 – Nanaimo – 35

May 28 – Glacier Greens – 22

May 29 – Junior Tillicum – Sunnydale – 25

June 4 – Malaspina Junior – Myrtle Point – 20

June 11/12 – Pheasant Glen Junior Open – 57 ( Championship for Zone Junior, Juvenile and Bantam boys and girls as well as the qualifier for the BCGA Junior Boys Championship)

June 25 – Alberni – 21

July 12 – Dawn Coe-Jones – March Meadows – 45

July 16 – Quality Foods Jr. – Qualicum Beach – 36

July 18/19 – David Court Memorial – Crown Isle – 52

July 23 – North Island Jr. – Comox – 26

July 25/26 – John Hick’s Jr. – Mt. Brenton – 45

The Zone Champions for the boys are, Junior – Matt Haddad of Pheasant Glen in a playoff over Jeff Dagg of Alberni; Juvenile – Mark  Valliere of Crown Isle and Bantam – Anthony Trozzo of Pheasant Glen. The 2011 Junior of the Year is Zack Anderson of Nanaimo. Zack is a Juvenile.

I spent  three days before the Spring Tour taking the SNAG program to schools in Powell River with Sheldon Theriault, assistant pro from Crown Isle. We introduced SNAG golf to about 300 students during this time.  I assisted with the SNAG program at schools in Campbell River,  Chemainus first Nations, Qualicum/Parksville, Youbou, Duncan. Mill Bay, Cowichan Bay and Victoria during the spring. All under the umbrella of the BCGA program as administered by Kathy Gook. Our SNAG kit got a good work out. So did I.

I partook in a SNAG certification program at Nanaimo in the early New Year. This was well attended by many of our area pros and some from Victoria. The program was presented by Kathy Gook and Elizabeth Gordon from the BCGA Office. One off shoot of these ventures is that Storey Creek, Sunnydale and Qualicum all now have SNAG kits and are actively persuing new golfers.

I teamed with Jody Jackson, Technical Director, BCGA to present a Future Links clinic at Beban Park Pitch and Putt to about 20 new golfers and to run an evaluation clinic for the same. Jody joined with Kyle Stoudt of Storey Creek to do the same after the BC Juvenile Championship in August.

To finish the year off I was part of the BCGA team at the BC Juvenile Championship at Myrtle Point. This was an enjoyable four days. Our team of Mark Valliere, Zach Anderson and Dallas Jones were less than stellar. They just couldn’t get on track and this was after Mark led the BC team to the Western Canada Summer Games to a resounding win.

Apart from the Inter-zone mess, I would rate the year a success. Many fine young men have graduated with many more on the verge of filling their spots as fine young golfers and people.

 Respectively submitted;

Pat. K. Irwin - Junior Development  Chairman,

Rules Chair Report - 2011

Each year our services are more sought after and the number of events we attended grew again. This year we attended a ladies event at Nanaimo, which initiated some interest discussions. This year we did the following events:

BCGA Zone 6 Amateur and Senior Championships

BCGA Zone 6 Junior Championships

Nanaimo Men's Amateur

Nanaimo Ladies Open

Qualicum Men's Amateur

Tillicum Men's Amateur

Glacier Greens Men's Amateur

Storey Creek Men's Amateur

In addition to these events our team members also attended at:

The International Pairs Western Canada Championships

The Military PAC Nationals

As part of our mandate we also conducted a rules workshop at Myrtle Point and Crown Isle. The workshop is comprised of an afternoon with an indoors visual presentation followed by a practical session out of doors at various stations covering relief and penalty situations in bunkers, hazards, abnormal ground conditions and obstructions.

Cost to the zone for providing officials for all these events was approximately $1000.00.

For the upcoming 2012 season we hope to be able to conduct additional rules workshops and provide rules teams to various events on an 'as available basis'.

We are also hoping to attract new members to our rules team. Anyone who is interested in the rules can contact John Davis at jmd001@shaw.ca or phone at 250-703-2980.

As well, any course that is hosting a major event should make arrangements for a rules team as early as possible to ensure availability of team members. The zone is providing some funding to assist with our rules team travel in 2012.

Respectfully submitted;

John Davis - Rules Chair
